IBM completes acquisition of HRL Laboratories

IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, a research and development institution specializing in quantum computing, sensing, materials science, and advanced communications.

The acquisition aims to strengthen IBM’s quantum hardware roadmap by combining HRL’s expertise in silicon-spin qubits with IBM’s existing leadership in superconducting quantum computing. HRL also provides critical capabilities in quantum materials, cryogenics, control electronics, and interconnect technologies.

This move supports IBM’s long-term quantum goals, including the development of the fault-tolerant quantum computer IBM Quantum Starling, projected for 2029, and the subsequent Blue Jay system targeted for the mid-2030s. HRL was previously owned jointly by Boeing and General Motors.
