IBM tests modular cryogenic cooling for fault-tolerant quantum computing

IBM has achieved a significant milestone in quantum computing development by successfully connecting and cooling two modular cryogenic units at its Yorktown Heights facility. The system reached temperatures below 15 millikelvin, creating an environment colder than deep space to stabilize highly sensitive quantum states.

This modular cooling approach is designed to support the scaling of quantum systems, specifically for the planned IBM Quantum Starling, which is targeted for delivery in 2029. The goal is to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of detecting and correcting its own errors. By using modular units and L-coupler technology, IBM aims to connect multiple processors to reach at least 1,000 programmable qubits by 2027.

In addition to hardware advancements, IBM has released Qiskit Fermions, an open-source software tool. This framework is designed to bridge the gap between molecular research and quantum hardware by translating complex fermionic particle behaviors into instructions that quantum computers can execute, facilitating more accurate simulations of materials and molecules.
