IBM launches self-hosted IBM Bob for secure AI software development

IBM has announced a self-hosted version of IBM Bob, an AI agent-driven development partner designed to support the entire software development lifecycle and modernization. This new deployment option allows organizations to run the tool within on-premises, private cloud, sovereign cloud, or air-gapped environments. This addresses the needs of highly regulated industries that require strict control over data residency, security policies, and AI governance, often preventing the use of public cloud AI platforms.

Unlike many AI coding tools that require data to be moved to external services, the self-hosted IBM Bob enables AI capabilities to be deployed directly within the environment where the customer's code and application context already reside. This flexibility supports hybrid configurations and allows for the use of licensed models in disconnected environments.

In practical application, users have reported significant efficiency gains. For example, Shoichi Yamaguchi of Matsuzawa Shoten utilized IBM Bob to develop an automated ordering program in approximately one day. By feeding existing RPG source code into the tool, he was able to extract specific subroutines and manage complex tasks, such as transitioning processes to work via stored procedures, despite the inherent challenges of debugging AI-generated logic.
