IBM pledges $10 B to build fault‑tolerant quantum computer and launches $2 B quantum‑chip foundry
IBM announced a multi‑year program to invest more than $10 billion in quantum‑computing research, development and manufacturing. The plan targets a large‑scale, fault‑tolerant quantum computer by 2029 and includes the creation of a dedicated quantum‑chip foundry, Anderon, in Albany, New York. Anderon will be funded with $2 billion – half from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS programme and half from IBM’s own cash – and is intended to become the U.S. counterpart to TSMC for quantum wafers.
The investments are part of a broader U.S. push to strengthen national leadership in quantum technologies, complementing a separate $2 billion federal program that supports several quantum‑technology firms. IBM already operates more than 90 quantum systems worldwide and expects the new facilities to accelerate commercialization of quantum hardware for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, finance and logistics.
