IBM software segment performance draws investor focus ahead of earnings
IBM is approaching its third-quarter earnings report, with investors closely monitoring the performance of its software segment. While the company's stock has declined approximately 21% in 2026 and sits 29% below its June peak, analysts remain focused on the software division as the primary driver of revenue and profit.
Recent data shows a slowdown in organic software growth. In the second quarter, software revenue grew 5% year-over-year, a significant decrease from 14% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 11% in the first quarter of 2026. CFO James Kavanaugh noted that this recent growth was supported by acquisitions, such as the purchase of data-streaming firm Confluent, rather than organic expansion. Management attributed some delays to customers shifting budgets toward hardware and certain large deals failing to close on expected timelines.
Despite these challenges, certain areas show strength. Red Hat, IBM’s hybrid cloud business, grew by 11%, and data software saw a 19% increase. Analysts have noted that the company’s market position is supported by strategic acquisitions, cloud partnerships, and rising enterprise AI adoption, leading to some upgrades in investment outlook.
