IBM study: CFO roles expanding through AI strategy leadership

An IBM Institute for Business Value study reveals that while the role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is expanding, actual AI implementation remains limited. Only 6% of finance teams surveyed report being in a transformation-ready state where AI is consistently embedded into workflows and decision-making at scale. Currently, 48% of CFOs describe their finance functions as being in a “developing” stage.

Despite low scaling, the CFO's responsibilities are shifting significantly. Approximately 62% of CFOs now lead enterprise technology or AI strategy. The research indicates that CFOs driving AI integration saw revenue growth rates 23% higher from 2022 to 2024 compared to their peers.

Looking toward 2030, the role is expected to encompass broader strategic and ethical duties. Specifically, 56% of respondents anticipate responsibility for designing financial and ethical guardrails for AI, while 55% expect to help shape operating models and workforce strategies. IBM CFO James Kavanaugh noted that the role is transitioning from a “guardian of stability” to an “agent of transformation,” where technology serves as a core component of competitive advantage.
