IBM to Acquire HRL Laboratories from Boeing and GM
Boeing and General Motors have signed a definitive agreement to sell their jointly‑owned research company HRL Laboratories to IBM. HRL, founded in 1948 and currently held equally by the two firms, develops advanced technologies for the automotive, aerospace and defense sectors. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the transaction will close only after the required regulatory approvals are obtained.
Both Boeing and GM said IBM will continue to build on HRL’s research legacy and that they will maintain collaborative work with IBM on quantum‑computing applications and other advanced technologies. Following the sale, Boeing will concentrate its resources on commercial aircraft, defense products and space systems, while General Motors will focus on its core automotive and technology programmes.
