IBM unveils Nighthawk r2 quantum processor with 25x faster speeds
IBM has launched its Nighthawk r2 quantum processor on the IBM Quantum Platform, marking a significant advancement in computational speed. The new processor can execute over 100,000 circuits per second, which is approximately 25 times faster than the current IBM Quantum Heron fleet.
While maintaining a scale of 120 programmable qubits, the Nighthawk r2 utilizes a new dissipative reset gadget to overcome previous bottlenecks. Unlike conventional conditional reset techniques that require hundreds of microseconds of idle time to return qubits to their ground state, this new architecture uses high-dynamic-range tunable couplers to actively draw qubits back to their ground state on demand. This allows for much faster transitions between circuit executions.
The processor features 218 dedicated couplers and 120 independent qubit reset elements, totaling 458 physical quantum elements. It has already demonstrated accurate results on circuits containing more than 7,500 gates, meeting a key 2026 milestone on the IBM Quantum Roadmap toward building fault-tolerant, large-scale quantum computers.
