Ibovespa falls as inflation and oil prices weigh on Brazilian market
The Ibovespa closed the week with a 0.95% loss, ending Friday at 183,476.86 points. The decline was driven by a combination of domestic and international factors, including higher-than-expected inflation and geopolitical uncertainty.
Domestically, the IPCA-15 inflation index rose 0.70% in September, exceeding the 0.53% forecast by economists. This acceleration, fueled by rising transport and energy costs, has led investors to believe that interest rate cuts may occur more slowly than previously anticipated.
On the corporate front, Petrobras shares fell by more than 2% due to declining oil prices, weighing heavily on the index. In contrast, banking stocks such as Itaú Unibanco and Bradesco, along with Vale and various utilities, showed resilience or slight gains, helping to limit total losses.
Internationally, rising yields on US Treasuries and volatility regarding oil supplies—linked to negotiations between the US and Iran—contributed to a cautious stance among investors. While the index saw a monthly gain of 3.41%, the weekly performance reflects a period of high volatility and a wait-and-see approach ahead of upcoming elections.
