Brazil markets react to election eve as dollar falls below R$ 5

The Brazilian financial market saw significant movement on Friday, October 23, as investors adjusted positions ahead of the presidential runoff between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro. The US dollar closed at R$ 4.993, a 0.92% daily decrease and a 1.58% decline over the week, marking its lowest level since October 9.

The Ibovespa rose 0.47% to 205,082.56 points, though it recorded a weekly loss of 0.17% due to election-related caution. In the commodities sector, Brent crude oil rose over 3% to approximately US$ 116.72, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East, reaching its highest level since April.

Goldman Sachs noted that while the real has potential for further appreciation, the tight race and fiscal uncertainties have increased post-election volatility risks. Analysts suggest that a victory for Flávio Bolsonaro could further boost assets, whereas a Lula reelection might trigger market corrections.
