Ibrahim Arief's prison sentence increased to 5 years in Chromebook corruption case
The PT DKI Jakarta High Court has increased the prison sentence for Ibrahim Arief, a former technology consultant at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), from four years to five years. The ruling pertains to a corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) services between 2019 and 2022.
Presiding Judge Catur Irianto stated that the original sentence was insufficient and did not adequately reflect the severity of the offense or the goals of criminal justice. In addition to the increased prison term, the court imposed a new requirement for Ibrahim Arief to pay 5 billion rupiah in replacement money. If this amount is not paid, he faces an additional four years in prison.
The court maintained a fine of 500 million rupiah, which, if unpaid, will be substituted by 140 days of imprisonment. While the court noted mitigating factors such as the defendant's polite behavior and family responsibilities, it emphasized that his actions were detrimental to the government's anti-corruption programs.
