Ibrahim Babangida releases autobiography addressing Nigerian military history
Former Nigerian military leader Ibrahim Babangida has released an autobiography as part of a broader trend of former military rulers publishing memoirs to provide historical perspective.
In the memoir, Babangida addresses the controversial 1993 annulment of the presidential election results, known as the June 12 debacle. He expresses deep regret for truncating the democratic transition and accepts full responsibility for his actions, stating he was wrong and should have acted differently.
Additionally, the book seeks to correct historical narratives regarding the January 1966 coup, specifically challenging the characterization of it as an ‘Igbo coup’ to avoid assigning collective ethnic guilt.
