Ibrahim Deraman named National Craft Figure 2026

Ibrahim Deraman, a 69-year-old batik artisan from Kampung Talak, Tumpat, has been named the National Craft Figure 2026. The award was presented by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Chiew Choon Man, during the opening ceremony of the Malaysia International Craft Festival (MICF) 2026.

Deraman is recognized for his expertise in various batik techniques, including layered block batik, ‘retak seribu’ (thousand cracks), and discharge batik. His work, such as the ‘Gabungan Dua Zaman’ theme, has gained international attention, including from French tourists, and was notably worn by the Malaysian delegation during the 47th ASEAN Summit.

Addressing the challenges of the craft, Deraman noted that the complexity and patience required for batik making often deter younger generations because the process appears deceptively simple. To ensure the survival of the tradition, he emphasized that interest and true mastery are essential, rather than just inheriting a family name. Currently, three of his eight children are training to carry on his batik enterprise.
