Ibrahim Gusau seeks second term as NFF President amid performance criticism

Ibrahim Musa Gusau is facing significant scrutiny as he launches a bid for a second term as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with elections scheduled for September.

Critics point to a decline in national team performances as a primary reason for dissatisfaction. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the Super Falcons experienced a disappointing performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Additionally, the national U-17 and U-20 teams have struggled to achieve success.

Supporters of Gusau argue that the presidency should be evaluated on administrative progress rather than just match results. They cite achievements in coaching education through CAF licensing courses, referee reforms, infrastructure development via FIFA Forward funding, and the expansion of women’s football and domestic league administration as evidence of meaningful structural growth.
