Ibrahim Idris, former Kogi State Governor, dies in UK at 77

Former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77. Reports indicate he passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following a period of illness.

Idris served two terms as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure included significant infrastructure, education, and healthcare projects, though his 2007 re-election was famously nullified by courts before he successfully contested a re-run in 2008.

In response to his passing, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has declared a three-day mourning period and ordered that the national and state flags be flown at half-mast. The state government has announced that Idris will be accorded a state burial, with the government assuming full responsibility for the arrangements.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and various political leaders, including former governors and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, have expressed condolences, describing his death as a significant loss to the nation and the people of Kogi State.
