Ibrahim Mahama asked to help dredge rivers as floods hit Ghana's Wassa Amenfi West

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Ghana’s Wassa Amenfi West Municipality has appealed to businessman and Engineers & Planners CEO Ibrahim Mahama to assist in dredging the Tano and Samre rivers to curb persistent flooding. Heavy rainfall caused the rivers to overflow on June 14, leading to the collapse of more than 24 buildings, extensive property damage and the displacement of many residents.

Deputy Municipal Director Christopher Bevel said on June 22 that floodwaters continue to rise, forcing authorities to move victims from schools to churches and private homes. He recalled Mahama’s earlier help dredging the Odo River and urged him to provide equipment for the current effort. “The flood started on Sunday, June 14, but it keeps increasing,” Bevel said.

The appeal highlights the ongoing humanitarian strain on temporary shelters and relief centres as the community seeks to mitigate further damage.
