Ibrahim Mahama awarded French Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Ghanaian contemporary artist Ibrahim Mahama has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s highest cultural distinctions. The honor was presented by the French Ambassador to Ghana, Diarra Dimé-Labille, during a ceremony at the French Residence in Accra.

The award recognizes significant contributions to arts and literature. Mahama is known internationally for large-scale installations that utilize repurposed materials, such as jute sacks used for transporting cocoa and charcoal, to comment on labor, migration, and global trade.

Beyond his artistic practice, Mahama has invested in Ghana’s cultural infrastructure by founding the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), Red Clay Studio, and Nkrumah Volini in his hometown of Tamale. Mahama described the recognition as a “win for the creative arts industry in Ghana,” emphasizing the importance of using international opportunities to create local impact.
