Ibrahim Traoré calls for scientific education reform in Burkina Faso

During the 2026 School Excellence Day in Burkina Faso, President Ibrahim Traoré called for a fundamental shift in the national education system toward scientific and technical disciplines. Addressing top students and teachers, Traoré criticized the current educational model for producing theorists rather than practical experts capable of driving industrialization.

He highlighted a significant imbalance in academic achievement, noting that out of approximately 65,000 baccalaureate graduates, over 50% are in literary streams, while only 571 obtained a scientific 'Bac C' and 38 earned a technical 'Bac E'. Traoré emphasized that economic sovereignty depends on a workforce capable of practical production, such as building refineries and managing industrial processes.

To address these shortages, the government plans a massive reorientation of educational tracks starting next school year, alongside the large-scale recruitment of specialized teachers to bridge the technical skills gap in the national market.
