IBSA nations demand urgent UN Security Council reforms
India, Brazil, and South Africa have called for urgent reforms to global governance institutions, specifically demanding the commencement of formal, text-based negotiations to overhaul the United Nations Security Council within a fixed timeframe. During the 14th IBSA Trilateral Ministerial Commission meeting held in New York, ministers from the three nations expressed concern over the paralysis of current inter-governmental negotiations and emphasized the need for the Security Council to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
The ministers voiced support for the aspirations of African nations to secure permanent seats, as well as the legitimate claims of India and Brazil to permanent membership. The IBSA grouping also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the voice of the Global South and advancing South-South cooperation through the IBSA Fund for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation.
In a joint statement, the representatives rejected the use of force against the territorial integrity of states and opposed unilateral coercive measures. They also endorsed India’s Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative and condemned a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
