Ibu Kimpul promotes local tubers through viral TikTok food innovations

A TikTok creator from Bantul, known as Ibu Kimpul, has gained viral attention for using kimpul (taro) to create modern food variations. Ibu Tin, the creator behind the @black.sheep8208 account, uses the traditional tuber as a substitute for common ingredients in popular snacks.

Her creations include “Kimpul Chewy Cookies,” where kimpul replaces marshmallows, and sushi nigiri, where mashed kimpul is used in place of Japanese rice. Ibu Tin stated that her motivation stems from a desire to preserve local food security and ensure that younger generations remain familiar with traditional tubers, which she noted are increasingly being forgotten.
