ICANN Moves Forward with .web Launch and dotBRAND Trademark Domains

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is advancing the introduction of new top‑level domains. VeriSign CEO Jim Bidzos announced that the .web domain is expected to begin registrations in 2026, starting with a 30‑day sunrise period for trademark owners listed in the Trademark Clearinghouse, followed by a limited registration period that will give existing .com holders priority before the domain opens to the public.

In parallel, ICANN has opened its first application window since 2012 for dotBRAND domains, which grant exclusive control of a TLD to a brand owner to block cybersquatting and typosquatting. Applications are accepted until 12 August 2026. The dotBRAND model is promoted as a proactive defense against phishing and other domain‑based attacks that have risen sharply in the EU and worldwide.
