ICAO report shows rising aviation deaths; IATA launches African safety workshops

The International Civil Aviation Organization's 2025 safety report found that commercial aviation carried nearly 5 billion passengers on about 38 million flights, with accidents falling to 85 — a decrease from the previous year. Fatal accidents dropped to four, yet total fatalities rose to 387, driven by a single disaster that claimed 260 lives.

Separately, the International Air Transport Association has started a series of monthly safety workshops across Africa, beginning with a session in Nairobi. Supported by Boeing, Kenya Airways and other regulators, the program targets the region’s high accident rate, which fell to 7.86 accidents per million sectors in 2025 but remains roughly six times the global average. Workshops will address ground‑operations risk, runway safety, space‑debris awareness and other topics to improve safety data sharing and operational practices.
