ICAO urges member states to protect civilian aircraft in conflict zones

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is urging member states to strengthen protections for civilian aircraft against increasing risks in conflict zones. The United Nations specialized agency warned that commercial aviation faces growing threats from long-range weapons, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), advanced air defense systems, and radio-frequency interference with global navigation satellite systems.

ICAO noted that while airlines can reroute flights to avoid certain areas, operational changes do not mitigate the underlying security threats. The agency is currently revising manuals regarding military activities and risk assessments for civil aircraft operating near or over conflict zones. The organization emphasized the need for improved intelligence sharing, better coordination between military and civil authorities, and timely decision-making to ensure aviation safety.
