Icaroramus perisi beetle fossil reveals unique Cretaceous traits

Scientists have discovered a 100-million-year-old beetle fossil preserved in Kachin amber from Myanmar, revealing unique anatomical features. The insect, named ‘Icaroramus perisi’, lived during the Cretaceous period and likely belonged to the extinct Cretophengodidae family, which is closely related to modern fireflies.

The fossil is notable for its highly specialized antennae, which feature a structure never before recorded in other beetles. Each antenna consists of 12 segments, with two distinct pairs of lateral branches between the fourth and 11th segments. One pair is longer with widened ends and thick bristles, while the other is shorter and finer with delicate hairs. Researchers suggest these structures may have enhanced the insect's ability to detect chemical pheromones for communication.

Additionally, the specimen possesses light-producing organs in its abdomen, confirming that bioluminescence was present in firefly relatives during the Cretaceous. While the exact purpose of this light is unknown, hypotheses include defensive signaling to deter predators.
