ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta calls for end to random bilateral cricket schedules

International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Sanjog Gupta has called for an end to the era of “randomly scheduled” bilateral cricket series. Speaking on the need for structural changes, Gupta argued that the sport requires more intentional scheduling to ensure sustainability through four key pillars: context, culture, competition, and competitiveness.

Gupta noted that these pillars require significant financial and non-financial resource investment. His remarks come as the ICC prepares to finalize the Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle for 2027–2031. The CEO also addressed the future of One-Day International (ODI) cricket, suggesting that while the format has faced scrutiny due to the rise of T20 leagues, it can thrive if it maintains focus on these driving levers.

The discussion follows concerns from former players, such as Graeme Smith and Jonty Rhodes, regarding the lack of consistency and context in bilateral matches outside of major tournaments. The next ODI World Cup is scheduled for late 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
