ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Faces Removal Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The International Criminal Court’s executive board has recommended that chief prosecutor Karim Khan be removed from office following a detailed investigation that found he engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a junior staff member. The relationship began in March 2023 and, according to a 27‑page decision viewed by Reuters, involved non‑consensual contacts in his office, private residence and during official trips, constituting a serious breach of duty and “severely inappropriate behavior.”

The board’s recommendation will be put to a vote of the ICC Assembly of States Parties – 125 member states – on 24 July in New York, where at least 63 votes are needed to remove Khan. He has been suspended both by the ICC and by a separate UK regulatory body for lawyers, which will decide his future in the coming weeks.
