ICC considers changes to 2027-31 cricket calendar
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering significant changes to the international cricket calendar for the 2027-31 Future Tours Programme (FTP). Discussions are expected to take place during a cricket operations workshop in Dubai this week, with a final schedule slated for approval at the ICC quarterly meeting in Bali this November.
Proposed adjustments include a potential reduction in bilateral One Day International (ODI) series in favor of an increased number of T20 Internationals between Full Member nations. This shift comes as boards struggle to manage a crowded schedule influenced by the rise of T20 leagues and the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature in the men’s T20 competition.
While bilateral ODIs may decrease, the ICC intends to maintain the importance of the ODI World Cup. Officials are exploring the use of tri-series or quadrangular tournaments to sustain interest in the format without reinstating the ODI Super League. Additionally, the ICC will discuss the future of the World Test Championship, including the potential expansion to include teams such as Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Ireland.
