Taliban leaders face ICC arrest warrants for gender persecution
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has unsealed arrest warrants for four senior Taliban leaders, accusing them of crimes against humanity. The warrants target Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani, Education Minister Habibullah Agha, and Higher Education Minister Neda Mohammad Nadeem.
The court alleges the suspects implemented governmental policies resulting in the systematic persecution of women, girls, and members of the LGBTQI+ community on gender grounds. The charges also include political persecution against those perceived as allies of women and girls. The alleged crimes, which occurred between August 2021 and at least January 2025, include murder, imprisonment, torture, rape, and enforced disappearance.
While the warrants were originally issued under seal between July and September 2025, their public disclosure marks a significant legal step in addressing human rights violations in Afghanistan. The Taliban government has rejected the ICC's authority, stating that Afghanistan does not recognize the court and follows Islamic Sharia law.
