Federal Judge Orders Immediate Reforms at Adelanto ICE Detention Center

U.S. District Judge Sunshine Suzanne Sykes issued a preliminary injunction ordering ICE and the private operator GEO Group to improve conditions at the Adelanto detention facility in San Bernardino County, California. The order requires 24‑hour access to clean drinking water, nutritionally adequate meals, free hygiene products, daily cleaning, removal of mold, proper bedding and temperature‑appropriate clothing, and comprehensive medical care. Detainees must also receive at least four hours of outdoor recreation daily, and isolation is limited to cases where a clear threat exists. The judge barred limits on family visitation hours and directed ICE to submit a corrective plan within 14 days, to be overseen by two independent monitors.

The injunction follows a lawsuit alleging inhumane and unconstitutional conditions after the deaths of several detainees, including DACA recipient Ismael Ayala‑Uribe and Gabriel García‑Avilés, and complaints of insufficient food, unsanitary facilities, and lack of medical attention. Judge Sykes found the plaintiffs likely to succeed on Fifth‑Amendment claims that the detention conditions constitute cruel and unusual punishment.
