ICE agent Christian Castro arrested in Minneapolis over shooting and false statements
Christian Castro, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, has been arrested in Minneapolis following a months-long legal standoff between Minnesota and Texas authorities. Castro faces state charges of second-degree assault and falsely reporting a crime related to a January 14 shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan immigrant. Prosecutors allege Castro fired a single round through a front door, striking Sosa-Celis in the leg, while children were inside the residence.
In addition to state charges, Castro faces federal charges after a grand jury indicted him on six counts of making materially false statements to the FBI. Prosecutors claim Castro falsely told investigators that he had been attacked with a snow shovel and a broom, a claim they say is contradicted by video evidence. This marks the first Department of Justice prosecution of a federal officer for actions taken during Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale immigration enforcement deployment in the Twin Cities area.
Castro’s arrest follows a dispute regarding his extradition from Texas, where he had been released on bond earlier this year. During a recent state court appearance, a judge set bail at $400,000 without conditions or $200,000 with conditions. One condition of the lower bail is that Castro must not oppose extradition if released. The Department of Homeland Security has suspended Castro from his position at ICE.
