ICE agents targeted by protesters in Salem, Oregon
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were targeted by protesters in Salem, Oregon, during enforcement operations. The confrontation occurred near a gas station and a parking lot on Lancaster Drive, where rioters reportedly attempted to box in federal vehicles to prevent agents from leaving.
Video footage shows individuals using baseball bats to strike a federal SUV and smashing a side mirror. During the clashes, one protester reportedly lay on a vehicle to obstruct agents, leading to a physical scuffle that was eventually ended when an agent deployed a chemical irritant. Other agitators were observed harassing agents and attempting to incite the crowd by announcing the presence of immigration authorities.
Reports indicate that some protesters utilized ‘rapid response’ networks to mobilize. There are allegations from federal sources that local and state law enforcement did not provide assistance to the agents during the incident. The unrest occurred amid an increase in ICE activity within the state.
