ICE agents injure U.S. citizen after mistaken identity in Illinois

A U.S. citizen sustained injuries to his head, neck, and teeth during a confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Evanston, Illinois. The incident occurred on a Sunday morning when five federal agents, conducting a targeted enforcement operation for a fugitive with a Chicago address, mistook the man for their intended target.

According to the Evanston Police Department, the altercation escalated when the man refused to provide identification, leading agents to attempt to handcuff him. After realizing the individual was a U.S. citizen and not the person they were seeking, the agents released him. The man was subsequently transported by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

One federal agent reported being injured during the attempt to handcuff the man and stated that the group left the area quickly due to fears of being attacked by gathered protesters. Local police are currently investigating the encounter and have photographed the man's injuries. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss stated that the police department will remain vigilant regarding federal activities.
