ICE agents mistakenly detain and injure U.S. citizen in Evanston

An Evanston, Illinois, resident was injured and hospitalized after being mistakenly targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The incident occurred on a Sunday morning when five federal agents, conducting a targeted enforcement operation for a fugitive with a Chicago address, encountered the man.

According to the Evanston Police Department, the man was found on the ground with injuries to his head, neck, and teeth. Witnesses reported seeing agents use force to subdue the individual, who was heard shouting that he was a U.S. citizen. The man was treated for minor injuries at St. Francis Hospital.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that agents identified themselves and that the individual was non-cooperative, refusing to provide identification. An agent also reported sustaining injuries while attempting to apply handcuffs. The Evanston Police Department is currently investigating the encounter.
