ICE approves demolition of Sabana Norte offices for new tower

The Board of Directors of the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has approved the demolition of its current offices in Sabana Norte to make way for the construction of the new Jorge Manuel Dengo Obregón building.

The proposed project involves a modern tower of up to 21 floors, covering approximately 40,000 square meters. The facility is designed to accommodate 1,100 people and is expected to include warehouses, an auditorium, parking, and a panoramic terrace. Marco Acuña, president of the ICE Group, described the move as a “strategic decision” aimed at providing a sustainable, high-tech workspace that benefits employees and the country.

However, the plan has faced criticism regarding the high cost and the necessity of the project. Constitutional lawyer and former presidential candidate Fernando Zamora has criticized the decision to demolish a functional building for the new construction.
