ICE arrests Brazilian murder fugitive in Massachusetts

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Maycon Souto Dos Reis, a 54-year-old Brazilian national wanted for aggravated murder, in Westborough, Massachusetts. The arrest occurred on August 3, just two days before Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed the Protect Act, a law designed to restrict certain ICE operations within the state.

According to ICE, Dos Reis fled Brazil and illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in June 2024. Although he was apprehended at the border, he was subsequently released into the United States under previous administration policies. David Wesling, acting ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Director for the Boston Field Office, stated that such individuals are often mischaracterized as non-criminals because they lack criminal records within the United States despite having violent histories abroad.

In a separate context, border enforcement official Tom Homan defended the agency against calls for its abolition, noting that 70% of those detained are convicted criminals and highlighting ICE's role in rescuing over 150,000 smuggled children.
