ICE arrests Guyanese murder suspect in Queens
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested 45-year-old Kanand Ojha in Long Island City, Queens. Ojha is accused of murdering Nephi Noel in Georgetown, Guyana, in 2015, before fleeing to the United States one week later.
Ojha initially entered the country lawfully via Kennedy Airport, but his legal status was revoked upon the discovery of an outstanding arrest warrant from Guyana. The arrest was conducted on September 8 by the U.S. Marshals Service’s New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, which includes agents from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations.
Kenneth Genalo, ICE’s New York field director, stated that the arrest makes New Yorkers safer and criticized local policies that limit cooperation between city agencies and federal immigration authorities. Genalo suggested that such restrictions allow dangerous fugitives to remain in local communities.
