New York immigration: DHS announces 2,197 arrests in Operation Rotten Apple
U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced the results of ‘Operation Rotten Apple,’ a monthlong immigration enforcement surge in New York state conducted between July 27 and August 29. The operation, which targeted New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley, resulted in the arrest of approximately 2,197 individuals.
Mullin stated that the operation targeted violent offenders, including murderers, rapists, and gang members. He criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for their sanctuary policies and the ‘Local Cops, Local Crimes’ Act, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal agencies via 287(g) agreements. Mullin claimed these policies have led to the release of thousands of individuals with DHS detention orders.
In response, Governor Hochul denied that New York is a sanctuary state for criminals and accused the administration of political games. Nationally, ICE arrest numbers have seen a significant increase, with approximately 49,571 arrests recorded in July and nearly 50,000 in August. Data from the Deportation Data Project indicates that a substantial portion of these arrests involve individuals without criminal convictions.
