Randa, Switzerland, on alert as 250,000-ton ice block moves toward village
Authorities in the Swiss canton of Valais have issued a level three warning for the village of Randa due to a massive 250,000-ton ice block moving down the Weisshorn East hanging glacier. The ice mass is currently sliding downhill at a rate of up to 20 centimeters per day.
Experts, including Norbert Carlen, a natural hazard engineer for the canton, warn that recent snowfall increases the risk of a catastrophic chain reaction. If the ice block breaks away, it could sweep up the accumulated snow on the Bis glacier plateau, triggering a massive avalanche.
While the village of approximately 450 residents is not currently in the direct path of the ice, exclusion zones have been established. Authorities have stated that a level four warning, which would include mandatory evacuations, will be triggered if a collapse becomes imminent.
