ICE conducts mass arrests in D.C. area and detains mother and daughter in Florida

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted two significant enforcement actions. In the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas, a two-week initiative known as ‘Operation Safe Community’ resulted in the arrest of 1,328 undocumented immigrants between August 1 and August 14. According to the Department of Homeland Security, approximately 400 of those apprehended had prior criminal convictions, including charges for murder, robbery, and sexual assault. Officials noted the operation targeted individuals in areas with sanctuary-style policies.

Separately, in Central Florida, Ecuadorian nationals Grace Calero Cabanilla and her daughter Giulianna Carriel Calero were taken into ICE custody at HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital. The women had been admitted to the emergency room following a serious car accident. While local authorities stated the women were detained because their visas had expired, family members claim they were in the midst of pending asylum processes and have criticized the decision to arrest them while receiving medical treatment.
