ICE detention facility construction paused in Santa Clara County, California

Federal authorities have agreed to temporarily halt construction of a planned immigration detention facility at 7240 Holsclaw Road in unincorporated Santa Clara County, near Gilroy. The pause, lasting until Sept. 9, is part of a procedural compromise in a lawsuit filed by Santa Clara County and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, which alleges the project violates environmental, intergovernmental‑cooperation and zoning laws.

The county and state continue to pursue a preliminary injunction, seeking an expedited hearing no later than Sept. 9 (previously scheduled for Oct. 7). The pause is described by Attorney General Bonta as a step to protect people, communities and the environment while the litigation proceeds. DHS officials have not commented, and while the agency has said the site will be used for office space, blueprints show ICE‑related detainee processing areas.
