ICE records highest July arrests and detentions under Trump administration
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained roughly 46,000‑73,000 people in July 2026, marking the largest monthly detention count since President Donald Trump returned to office. The agency also made about 51,000 immigration arrests that month, averaging 1,400‑1,500 arrests per day, a new record for ICE.
The surge follows a White House goal of 2,000 daily arrests and comes after the Department of Homeland Security secured billions in additional funding, hired thousands of new agents, and expanded operations at airports, highways and immigration offices. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the administration is “turning up the heat” on illegal immigration.
The crackdown has targeted Haitian migrants, especially after the Trump administration moved to end their Temporary Protected Status, affecting roughly 300,000 Haitians. Critics in Puerto Rico and elsewhere have warned that the intensified enforcement raises civil‑rights concerns. ICE also announced four new detention facilities in Philadelphia, Seattle, Denver and Miami, adding about 5,500 beds to its system.
