ICE detentions hit record high under Trump, including dozens of military families
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recorded a historic surge in arrests during the Trump administration. Internal data show that ICE made more than 51,000 arrests in July 2026, the highest monthly total since the Department of Homeland Security was created, surpassing the roughly 46,000 detentions recorded in June 2026. An Associated Press investigation revealed that the crackdown also targets families of active‑duty U.S. service members. At least 51 parents and spouses of service members have been detained since President Donald Trump began his second term, six of whom have been deported and eight remain in federal immigration custody. Detentions of military families are said to undermine readiness by removing emotional support and caretakers for service members’ children.
Human‑rights groups note that most detainees have no criminal histories—only about 34% have prior convictions. Since Trump took office, there have been at least 30 incidents in which ICE agents shot civilians, resulting in eight deaths, and a total of 55 deaths have occurred in ICE custody, including 22 in 2026.
