ICE enforcement actions alarm California community colleges
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations at various California community colleges have caused significant alarm among students and faculty. Recent incidents include the arrest and deportation of a student at Santa Monica College, the use of a parking lot as a staging ground at Santa Barbara City College, and an arrest on a public street within the San Diego Community College District.
At Allan Hancock College, federal agents arrested a student's father in a campus parking lot. College administrators have expressed frustration over their limited authority to prevent federal agents from entering campus grounds. While state laws require colleges to notify students of enforcement presence and mandate warrants for entering nonpublic areas like classrooms, outdoor spaces such as quads and parking lots are considered public, allowing agents to operate there without such restrictions.
