ICE enforcement actions surge in Indianapolis and San Diego

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted a series of high-profile enforcement actions in Indianapolis and San Diego, prompting calls for transparency from local officials.

In Indianapolis, local leaders are seeking answers following a surge in immigration arrests throughout the region, including Carmel and Westfield. Reports and video footage have documented agents intercepting individuals in traffic and at gas stations. City officials noted that these operations have occurred without advance notice or clear communication regarding procedures. Data indicates a significant rise in ICE activity, with arrests reaching 49,000 in July, the majority of whom were accused of civil immigration violations rather than criminal offenses.

In San Diego, ICE agents in an unmarked vehicle intercepted a car near San Diego City College. The driver, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Renatho Kemsley Casseus, an undocumented immigrant from Haiti, was taken into custody. While college officials initially believed the driver was a student, the DHS stated Casseus entered the country via El Paso, Texas, in May 2023. During the encounter, a passenger fled toward the campus, but agents reportedly ceased their pursuit upon entering the college grounds.
