ICE enforcement activity rises in Maine and Washington

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased its enforcement activity across several U.S. regions. In Maine, the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition reports a significant surge in arrests. Data indicates that Lewiston and South Portland tied for the highest number of arrests in the state with 64 each through July 31, while Auburn recorded 31. The coalition notes that ICE activity has been verified in 50 communities in 2024, up from 20 communities previously.

In Washington state, 46-year-old Juan Gerardo Alatorre Martinez was detained in Conway on July 30. Martinez, a Mexican national who has lived in the U.S. for over 25 years and is seeking lawful permanent residency, was arrested while arriving for work at a gas station. His attorney suggests the arrest may have resulted from mistaken identity involving a vehicle registration. While the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the operation targeted Martinez, describing him as a “criminal illegal alien” due to prior driving convictions, legal representatives are contesting the necessity of the enforcement action.
