ICE enforcement causes labor shortages in South Texas

Increased enforcement operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in South Texas are causing significant labor shortages in the agricultural and construction sectors. Local business owners report that worker availability has dropped by as much as half, impacting the ability to harvest crops and complete building projects.

These enforcement actions are also creating political shifts in the region. While South Texas has recently trended toward Republican support, a September survey by Cook Political Report indicates a potential erosion of this support. The data shows that nearly two-thirds of Texas Hispanics are less willing to vote for candidates supporting mass deportations, and 61% hold a negative view of ICE. This sentiment could impact upcoming legislative elections in competitive districts where Republican margins were previously high.
