San Francisco to fund $1.8 million for immigrant legal defense

San Francisco officials have announced plans to allocate $1.8 million in supplemental funding for immigrant legal defense services. The decision follows a reported surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity across the Bay Area, including a widely circulated video of a masked arrest in the SoMa neighborhood.

Supervisor Jackie Fielder announced the funding at a City Hall rally, noting that the resources will support immigration attorneys, a rapid-response hotline, and accompaniment services for ICE appointments. The Bay Area Habeas Network is slated to receive $125,000 to assist with habeas corpus petitions to challenge detentions.

The funding comes amid reports of increasingly aggressive enforcement tactics. In San Francisco, the arrest of Milton Ramos-Rodriguez, a 51-year-old El Salvadoran national, sparked local outrage after footage showed agents brandishing a firearm. ICE defended the arrest, stating Ramos-Rodriguez is a previously deported individual with a voluntary manslaughter conviction.

Similar enforcement activity has been reported in other regions, including San Diego County, where community activists documented an arrest at a local business. Immigration attorneys and advocacy groups have warned of an uptick in both the frequency and the level of force used during recent operations.
