ICE operations disrupt beef supply chain in Kansas and surrounding states

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in southwest Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas are causing significant disruptions to the beef supply chain. Industry groups, including the Kansas Livestock Association, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, and the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, report that the presence of federal agents has led to increased worker absences and delays in shipping thousands of cattle.

These disruptions have reportedly resulted in millions of dollars in lost revenue and could lead to higher beef prices for consumers. Some meatpacking plants in Dodge City, Liberal, and Garden City have been forced to temporarily halt operations or reduce shifts, causing cattle to be returned to feedlots, which raises concerns regarding animal health and operational stability.

While the Department of Homeland Security confirmed ICE activity in the region, officials stated they are not conducting raids directly at worksites. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted that agents are targeting heinous criminals. However, local officials and community organizers expressed concern over the lack of advance notice and the resulting atmosphere of fear within immigrant-heavy communities.
