ICE enforcement operations increase in California

Immigration attorneys and local officials are reporting a surge in aggressive enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) across California. In the San Francisco Bay Area, legal advocates have noted an uptick in reports of violent arrests and operations conducted without valid warrants, prompting concerns regarding the violation of sanctuary city policies.

In Santa Maria, city officials reported that federal agents violently detained a 20-year-old U.S. citizen student with disabilities. According to local council members, the student required surgery for a wrist injury following the encounter. An ICE spokesperson stated that agents were conducting a targeted operation and encountered an individual who matched the description of a target, asserting that agents used training to control the situation after the individual resisted commands.
