ICE face scrutiny over detainee death and fatal shooting

Recent incidents involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have drawn scrutiny regarding the treatment and safety of detainees.

In New Jersey, the family of Edwin López Cornejo, a Salvadoran immigrant who had resided in the U.S. for 20 years, has alleged medical negligence following his death at the Delaney Hall detention center. His mother, María Cornejo, stated that her son suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure, and seizures, and claimed he was unable to continue his necessary medical treatments while detained. While ICE officials reported that Cornejo collapsed after complaining of dizziness and fatigue, his family maintains he was already in critical condition when transported to a hospital.

In Houston, Texas, the community held a memorial for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican construction worker killed during an ICE operation on July 7. There are conflicting accounts regarding the shooting; the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims Salgado attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon, while witnesses and passengers dispute this, alleging he was shot without provocation. Harris County has approved $2.5 million over three years for an independent investigation into the federal agents' actions, though prosecutors noted that federal agencies have not yet released all available evidence.
